Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is set to become mandatory for many self-employed individuals and landlords over the coming years. But did you know you can sign up early? Joining HMRC’s pilot scheme now gives you the opportunity to get familiar with the process, test your software, and avoid last-minute pressure. This post outlines the benefits, eligibility, and steps to register.

Although MTD for IT becomes mandatory in phases, the pilot scheme is open to volunteers, even if you’re not yet required to comply.

MTD for IT rollout timeline:

  • From April 2026: Mandatory for individuals with total gross income over £50,000 from self-employment and/or property.
  • From April 2027: Mandatory for those earning between £30,000–£50,000.
  • Future phases: HMRC will consult on extending MTD to those earning between £20,000–£30,000, though no date is confirmed.

If your income is below £50,000, you’re not required to join just yet — but you can still sign up voluntarily through the pilot scheme.

To be eligible to join the pilot now, you must:

  • Be a UK resident
  • Be registered for Self Assessment
  • Have income from a single sole trade and/or UK property (not both)
  • Use MTD-compatible software
  • Have up-to-date tax records with HMRC

You don’t need to wait for the rules to apply — volunteering early gives you time to adapt and avoid a rush later.

Joining the pilot scheme early offers several advantages:

  • Time to adjust: Familiarise yourself with quarterly updates and digital record-keeping before it becomes mandatory.
  • Avoid last-minute stress: Start learning now, while support is readily available.
  • Trial your software: Make sure you’re comfortable using MTD-compatible tools.
  • Smooth onboarding: Early issues can be resolved before full rollout.
  • Dedicated HMRC support: Pilot participants have access to a dedicated HMRC helpline, offering more tailored assistance compared to general support channels.
  • Get support: Access help from software providers, HMRC, and advisors who are already supporting the transition.

To join the pilot, you’ll need:

  1. MTD-compatible software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent)
  2. To sign up through the HMRC MTD for IT sign-up page
  3. Your Government Gateway ID, National Insurance number, and business information

Ensure your software is linked correctly to HMRC before submitting your first quarterly update.

  • Log income and expenses regularly: Keep digital records up to date.
  • Use automation: Bank feeds and smart invoicing tools save time.
  • Do quarterly check-ins: Don’t wait for the year-end.
  • Back up your records: Cloud-based systems are ideal.
